Toilet Grab Bar Installation

Grab bars should always be professionally installed.  ADA specification 609.8 states that a vertical or horizontal force of 250 pounds (1112 N) must be able to be applied at any point on the grab bar, fastener, mounting device, or supporting structure without failure. A bar that is not properly mounted to appropriate backing will fail.

Side Wall – As illustrated below, the side wall grab bar must be a minimum of 42 inches long, and located a maximum of 12 inches from the rear wall. It must also extend a minimum of 54 inches from the rear wall. The bar should be mounted 33-36 inches from the floor.

Rear Wall – As illustrated below, the rear wall grab bar must be a minimum of 36 inches long and extend from the centerline of the toilet a minimum of 12 inches on one side and 24 inches on the other side. The bar should be mounted 33-36 inches from the floor.
